Interview : Lilly Pollard, Bodyboarder girl

Let’s have a look in the bodyboard area ! To come with us, Lilly Pollard, 29, Aussie Girl and one of the best bodyboarder girl in the World.

Hi lilly, howdy ? Can you introduce yourself ?

Hey Surfmadam! Nice to meet you online :) Loving your website of chicks ripping on all crafts!
Well I’m an Aussie bodyboarder from Gerringong, on the South Coast NSW. It’s very chilly here in winter, but we have plenty of tasty reef breaks to play in :) I’ve been bodyboarding for over 14 years now, and loving every minute of it! I’ve won 5 National titles (I think), and finished at 3rd on the IBA Womens World Tour in 2007.
I live for bodyboarding, but unfortunately this sport doesn’t pay the bills in Oz! So I also survive by working in a supermarket. It’s alright though cause I get to eat the deli meat! ha! Pretty yuk actually.
I am also working on a girls bodyboarding label (in conjunction with Turbo Surf Designs), it’s called Milkshakes Designs -Boards that Girls Love to Ride. I’m really proud of the brand and am stoked to have a great team of bodyboard girls on hand helping with everything from logo and web designing to ripping it up on our boards in the water! Check us out at: Milkshakesdesigns.com

How long have you been praticing bodyboard ?

14 years :) My bro made me do it!

What is your point of you of the female international scene for the bodyboard ?

The international girls shred! We have a pretty strong world tour (check out www.ibaworldtour.com), with events in Brazil, Portugal, Venezuela, and my two favourite events at Pipeline Hawaii, and Confital in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) – I love this place!

The girls on tour are all really great people as well, always up for adventure, a laugh, and to hunt out crazy waves!

The guy’s level comes more and more close to being stunt, do you think that the bodyboard girl are going in these direction ?

Definitely. It’s amazing the airs that bodyboarders can do, especially the new crew of young female shredders. Nowadays there’s chicks busting ARS’s, inverts, air reverses and even backflips. It’s awesome to see the level improving so much. The current world number one bodyboarder, Isabela Sousa, is a grommet from Brazil who goes big. Isabela actually beat the guys to win a big air contest in Portugal 2009, awesome huh!

Before there was always a girl sequence in the bodyboard video, Why not continue ?

To be honest, I really don’t know!! The media for women’s bodyboarding has been pretty limited over the past few years. I think maybe it’s a combination of a few factors. Firstly, all the bodyboard magazines and videos are fully run by guys and they haven’t really been supporting the girls enough I think. Plus also I believe the bodyboard girls need to work harder at getting on camera. A lot of the girls mostly focus on contests and not enough on surf trips with photographers and videographers. It is hard for the girls to afford to do all this though. We are working to change that!

You bodyboard girls, you surf such big and deep waves, how do you do ?

Well, for sure we have the advantage of not having to get up on our feet when we take off on a wave. It means we can take off later and deeper and even air drop into a wave with no worries. I think some of the bodyboard girls are a little crazy too! ha!
You know, I really think bodyboarding is such a great sport to learn because it is easy to learn the basics, you can catch waves immediately when you learn to bodyboard, and then when you advance it is such a radical sport; the heavy reefs, deep pits and especially all the aerial moves. Obviously I just love it!

Your best memory in Bodyboard ?

Ohh there is a few! My first spin!…. My first contest meeting all the girls….. A long deep barrel along the desert coast of Western Australia (WA)….. Traveling the world and meeting some amazing people. And winning the Confital Pro in 2007 in Canary Islands. Some of my highlights!

Your favourite wave ?

I think Thombstones in WA, or The Box…

Your biggest fear ?

Not being all that I can be. For myself and for others :)

You have the last word…

Thanks for the support mate! Your website is something to be really proud of. Congrats! I really love that you are uniting all forms of girls’ surfcraft on your site. And to all the water girls out there, hopefully see you in the surf somewhere soon!
Enjoy! Yew!

xo
