Fashion / Trends / Desires / ::: All these come and go with the seasons, the years, life that goes by, a particular moment, one’s personal perception of things… The only constant is change, evolution, dynamism. Which is why we don’t grow tired of it all; why we stay excited, why we indulge. Surf and fashion. Kind of a weird association, isn’t it? Nature and consumerism… But an association which nevertheless, contributes to make the full circle of Surfing culture. Surfwear was started in the 70′s with the production of a few boardshorts. Men apparel lines quickly became more and more popular compared to Women apparel which hasn’t evolved as much and still isn’t the main focus of the industry. Indeed, W’s lines have been the same for years. Nowadays, a few brands are coming up with fresh ideas, ideas that get you excited. Tallow is one of these smaller brands that’s worth looking at. Meet Sharon, the women who started this project.
Could you tell me more about the creator(s) of Tallow brand ? Who are you ?
Ali (Tallow designer) and I (Shannon Clynes) created Tallow mid 2010 in Byron Bay. Both of us are longtime surfers and have worked in fashion and the surf industry for many years. Ali came to me with the concept of a feminine vs functional based line that I immediately identified with. There was a definite gap in the market for an authentic women’s surf based brand and we both felt we had the combination of skills and knowledge to accentuate the culture we love so dearly.
Byron is by far one of the most beautiful and eclectic beach towns in the world and we both felt it was the perfect place to start an independent women’s surf brand.
What is the purpose of Tallow ?
Tallow is predominantly designed around and marketed to the core surfing community. The brand simply embraces how womens’ surfing has developed as a lifestyle and culture – particularly in recent years. Our product philosophy is based upon a feminine-function-fashionable combination ensuring it will always be relevant to female surfers and their surrounds.
Where do you find inspiration ?
It really does come down to surfing, it’s pure sense of individuality and the artistic side it embodies.
How do you choose your featured artists ?
We have both grown up following many artists in both surfing and contemporary genres, so naturally we’ve approached our network of people and favourite artists to bring their ideas to the prints. The ocean is the one common ground we tend to focus on.
